Inbal: choosing a new nationality

My grandfather Shaiak Zuta was the seventh child in his family and was born in 1913 in the small village of Cisna in the Austro–Hungarian Empire.

When war broke out the family fled to Budapest.

During the war the Empire fell apart. At the end of the war the refugees in Hungary were asked to choose what citizenship they would prefer – Hungarian, Austrian or Polish.

My grandfather's parents chose to be Poles. They returned to the town of Przemysl in Poland. Today as a result of the Second World War most of the area is in the Ukraine.
